#6Gweek: 6G-XR Demonstrates Innovative Holoportation Technologies at IEEE PIMRC and one6G Summit
The 6G-XR project was present at the co-located events IEEE PIMRC 2024 (2-5 September 2024) and the One6G Summit (5-6 September 2024), held in the Palacio de Congresos in Valencia, Spain. Partners from the consortium, including Vicomtech and i2CAT, organized engaging demo showcases that highlighted the project’s advancements in 6G technology.
The 6G-XR project featured two notable demos, derived from its core activities and the outcomes of its open call projects, and its collaboration with the 6G-OpenVerso project also played an important role in these presentations.
Demo Highlights
Real-Time Holoportation
The first demo showcased outcomes from the METAPHOR cascading project. Attendees witnessed the real-time holoportation of two users into the virtual production environment developed by Brainstorm, an open call winner. Utilizing heterogeneous volumetric capture solutions from Brainstorm and i2CAT, the users were effectively holoported into the virtual scenario. The results could be visualized on a standard computer monitor or through a VR headset connected to a laptop, demonstrating the project’s capabilities in immersive virtual experiences.
Remote Rendered VR Access
The second demo, presented by Vicomtech and i2CAT, illustrated Remote Rendering technology to access VR experiences across various devices. Using a native player on a GPU-equipped laptop, a user was holoported into a virtual environment. To ensure interaction for users on laptops or VR headsets without GPUs, the volumetric video was processed through a GPU-equipped Remote Renderer. This setup generated a 2D-rendered WebRTC or DASH video stream, enabling seamless integration with web players on end devices. The demo also highlighted the outcomes of the REQUIEM cascading project, showcasing how Media over QUIC protocol facilitated communication between the Remote Renderer and the Web player.
Lastly, the OpenCamara cascading project by Neutroon—mentored by i2CAT—was also highlighted through a presentation video, showcasing its innovative outcomes and further enriching the 6G-XR project’s presence at the conference.
Engaging with Leaders in 6G Technology
Attending IEEE PIMRC 2024 and the One6G Summit provided 6G-XR with a unique platform to engage with leading figures from academia and industry in the field of 6G technology. The project successfully showcased its achievements in holographic communications and established new collaborative ties with the 6GOpenverso project, which co-organized the demos.
The participation of the 6G-XR project at these prestigious events marks a significant step in advancing the field of 6G technology, reinforcing its commitment to pioneering solutions for the future of communication.
