Scope of the event

Join us for the 6G-XR Impact Day, a full-day event that marks the culmination of 3 years of advanced experimental research and development in extended reality (XR) over Beyond 5G and 6G infrastructures.

This work has been carried out through 6G-XR (6G eXperimental Research), an EU-funded project under the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) partnership, aimed at strengthening European leadership in 6G technologies by enabling next-generation XR services and experimental infrastructures.

The project has developed a multisite research platform at a North Node (Finland) and South Node (Spain) to validate advanced use cases, radio technologies, multi-access edge computing, and immersive applications such as holography and digital twins. These efforts hold promise for enabling future applications across key vertical sectors including smart industry, training and education, the cultural sector, connected and automated mobility, healthcare, and the energy sector

Hosted at the 5TONIC open research and innovation laboratory—one of the South Node facilities for key use case tests and Open Call project experimentation—and organised by the South Node partners and the wider 6G-XR consortium, this event will bring together technology developers, vertical stakeholders, and policy experts to explore the results, impact, and next steps for XR innovation in Europe.

What to Expect?

  • Interactive sessions discussing implementation of XR technologies in verticals such as energy, mobility, media, and manufacturing.
  • Live demonstrations of key technologies developed throughout the project, including:
  • Real-time holographic communications;
  • 3D digital twin visualisation and interaction;
  • Energy-efficient immersive service delivery
  • Showcase results from 6G-XR’s Open Calls projects, featuring experimentation-driven innovations supported by our multisite testbed infrastructure (North Node and South Node).
  • Policy and standardisation dialogues focusing on responsible AI, environmental and social governance (ESG), and the role of 6G in shaping Europe’s digital future.
  • A hands-on experience with the infrastructure and testbeds that have enabled real-world experimentation for over a dozen third-party innovators.
  • Contributions from European Commission representatives reflecting broader alignment with the SNS JU Roadmap

As you attend the 6G-XR Impact Day in Madrid, the event will be a unique opportunity to connect, collaborate, and witness first-hand how XR and 6G are converging to redefine digital interaction.

Planned demonstrations

Optimizing immersive XR experiences with automated network congestion detection in 6G (Use Case 1)

Led by i2CAT and Ericsson

This demo will showcase how automated network congestion detection and network-assisted rate recommendation features can enhance the reliability and stability of eXtended Reality (XR) services in 6G environments. The demo will feature a real-time XR holographic communication session between 2 remote users in stable conditions. Then, it will evidence how network performance degradation impact the quality of audiovisual communication, and how such undesired conditions can be reliably mitigated by adjusting data rates based on the available resources.

Optimizing immersive XR experiences with automated edge resources allocation in 6G (Use Case 2)

Led by i2CAT, Capgemini, Vicomtech, and Ericsson

This demo will showcase how an edge resources allocation in 6G helps to enhance the performance and contributes to interoperability in eXtended Reality (XR) services. The demo will include two scenarios, both featuring a real-time holographic communication session. In the first scenario, it will be showcased how a dynamic selection of the best Edge server to manage the multiuser XR communications helps to mitigate network degradations, like high delays. In the second scenario, it will be showcased how the instantiation of Interactive Remote Rendering functions on the Edge allows the participation of lightweight client devices in resource-intensive XR services.

Holographic Call via IMS Data Channel – Native Dialer Integration for Real-Time 3D Communication

Led by TelefĂłnica, Ericsson, and MATSUKO

Demonstration of a native smartphone dialer-based holographic communication solution using IMS Data Channel and AI-driven cloud rendering.

This demonstration showcases real-time 3D holographic calling directly integrated into a smartphone’s native dialer. It enables a one-way hologram of a person with synchronized two-way audio, transmitted over a standards-based IMS Data Channel. The cloud-based technology performs real-time hologram reconstruction from a single-camera video feed using AI-enhanced processing. The demo highlights seamless integration into existing telecom infrastructure without additional applications, paving the way for immersive, next-generation 5G/6G communication services.

Co-creative cyber studio in a sliced 5G O-RAN network

Led by University of Oulu

3D digital twin Fab Lab remote work XR application under 5G O-RAN network with QoS measurement system

The demonstration presents a pioneering approach to developing remote Fabrication Laboratory (Fab Lab) using extended reality (XR) and 3D digital twins, enabled by cutting-edge advancements in private 5G networks. These XR Fab Labs enable multi-user remote collaboration and real-time control of R&D and manufacturing processes. Taking advantage of 3D digital twins and XR technologies, users can interact, review, and manipulate 3D models in a virtual space. The integration of ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) and network slicing within an Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN)-based private 5G framework provides robust low-latency connectivity. An operational demonstration compared eMBB and URLLC slices under congestion, while a user Quality of Experience (QoE) survey revealed high usability and minimal perceived latency. This approach confirms the feasibility of integrating XR-based digital twins with 5G slicing capability for remote design and manufacturing in cyber-physical spaces.

E2E application and 5G RAN optimization based on green energy availability

Led by VTT

Demonstration of an autonomous, energy-efficient, and sustainable communication solution incorporating green energy forecasting along with AI/ML-optimized control of energy consumption for RAN and video applications. The demonstration built at VTT Oulu uses accurate energy measurement framework to dynamically adjust the RAN and video application based on green energy availability. AI/ML is used in decision-making at centralized controller to optimize QoS for video users and the use of RAN energy saving features within the limits of energy budget.
